National Day of the Third of May
233 years ago, on May 3, 1791, the Four-Year Sejm adopted a government law that went down in history as the Constitution of May 3. It was the first modern constitution in Europe and the second in the world – after the American one – which became a document creating the identity of a sovereign nation. The constitution transformed the state into a constitutional monarchy and regulated the organization of state authorities as well as the rights and obligations of citizens. The May Third National Day was originally established in 1919 and then restored in 1990. Next to Independence Day, it is one of the most important state holidays.
